Description
Soft winter light dances between the towering pine trees as their shadows are cast across the frozen Lamar River in Yellowstone National Park, United States. Fresh powdery snow gives way to a lone coyote traveling on the river. What would make him change his course and intentionally go around the log that is barely visible in the snow? Did he hear something? Did he see something? It is always fascinating to me to see critter tracks and try to understand what is going on. It is all about survival on this harsh winter landscape.
The dynamics constantly change as the river thaws and refreezes through the winter. The logs and branches seen in this image will eventually be swept down river. They create a wonderful abstract in the meantime. If you zoom in you can see the snow glistening in the sunlight.

I love this. It must be really amazing to see these fresh prints in the snow like this

Thanks much Shoal! Yes it is! You don't realize how much they move around until you see their tracks in the winter.
