Description

Winter in the Yellowstone geyser basins is simply magical! They are hard to get to since the interior of the park is only open to snowcoaches and snowmobiles during the winter season.

Steamboat Geyser is located in the Back Basin at Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, United States. It is the world's tallest currently-active geyser with eruptions reaching as high as 300 feet. Hot steam and cold air mix to create rime ice that coats everything in its path, depending on which way the wind is blowing.

On this day, thousands of icicles had formed on all of the trees and vegetation in close proximity to the steam vents. If you zoom in on this image you can see them better. Any guess on how may icicles you think there are? Don't forget to count the ones under the snow pillows in the foreground!
