Description
The Wilson's Phalarope is a small shorebird with long legs, thin straight bill and a slender neck. During migration you can find them spinning around in tight circles in nutrient-rich water, creating a vortex that stirs up prey items. This one was found in Hayden Valley in Yellowstone National Park, United States.
Unlike most birds, the male and female mating habits are reversed. This is known as polyandry. The females are more brightly colored than the males and once the female has laid her eggs, she deserts the male. She is off looking for other males to mate with, while the male raises the young by himself.
