Description
Erosion of a butte, is slowly exposing large round rocks, called cannonballs, that had formed within the sediment layers at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota. Cannonballs are created when mineral rich water seeps through the porous layers. Acting like glue, the minerals bind the sediments together to form concretions.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is comprised of three separate units of the badlands in western North Dakota, United States. The park is approximately 70 acres in size.
