Description
Yellowstone National Park, United States, was established on March 1, 1872. In honor of the 146th birthday of our first national park, here are a few facts:
The Old Faithful Inn (building on the far right and in the shadow of the Old Faithful Geyser) was opened in the spring of 1904. Robert C. Reamer was the architect. The cost of the original 120 room structure was approximately $140,000, using materials gathered from within the park. In 1913 the east wing was added to the original structure. In 1927-28 the west wing was added and the front of the building was extended. In 1940 the interior logs were peeled to reveal patterns created by bark beetles and in 1966 the logs were cleaned and varnished. In 1987 the Old Faithful Inn was recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center (building directly behind Old Faithful Geyser) was opened on August 25, 2010, at a cost of $21million.
The highly predictable Old Faithful Geyser, is the most famous geyser in the park. It was named in 1870 during the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition.
In the early days it was often used as a laundry.
“Old Faithful is sometimes degraded by being made a laundry. Garments placed in the crater during quiescence are ejected thoroughly washed when the eruption takes place. Gen. Sheridan's men, in 1882, found that linen and cotton fabrics were uninjured by the action of the water, but woolen clothes were torn to shreds.” Winser, Henry J. (1883).
